Isle of Wight Pimm's

We're getting ready for summer with our Isle of Wight Pimm's made from Isle of Wight produce. Serve to the sound of leather on willow to ensure the produce is in season.

You will need:
  • Pimm's (leave out for alcohol free version)
  • Wight Crystal Traditional lemonade - made on the Isle of Wight and available from good farm shops and Made on the Isle of Wight - Ryde
  • Mint - Maybe available in the garden
  • Cucumber - Farmer Jacks Farm shop (Arreton) says the season runs throughout the summer
  • Soft Fruit - Apples all year around, Strawberries available early summer, Raspberries, Plums, Cherries and blueberries available at the height of the summer. Fruits from the hedges, such as blackberries, available later in the summer.
  • Ice
  • Large Jug
  • Tall Glasses
How to make:
  • Take a large jug and add 1 part Pimms and 3 parts lemonade
  • Chop cucumber and fruit and add to jug
  • Tear mint and add to jug
  • Stir together (If you command great self restraint you might want to let it stand to allow the flavours mingle)
  • Add Ice, Stir again and then serve in tall glasses
Have a few forks lying around as empty glasses are full of tempting fruit which is out of the reach of all but the longest fingers.

Isle of Wight Bloody Mary

The Isle of Wight Bloody Mary includes local Isle of Wight produce which makes it better for the environment and we think it tastes better too.

You will need:
  • 6 parts Isle of Wight tomato juice (See www.thetomatostall.co.uk)
  • 1 part vodka (optional)
  • 1 part lemon juice
  • 1 dash of Worcestershire sauce
  • salt & ground pepper
  • hot pepper sauce
  • celery stalk
All the ingredients can be obtained from a good local shop or farm shop on the Isle of Wight. You might want to try Farmer Jacks in Arreton.

This is what you need to do:
  • Put the Tomatoe Juice, Vodka and Lemon Juice in a tall glass over ice cubes.
  • Mix well.
  • Add the salt & pepper to taste.
  • Garnish with the celery stalk
You might want to know:
  • Celery is planted in late February and goes into season early June to November
  • According to http://www.lovecelery.co.uk/:
The Bloody Mary cocktail was invented in the 1920’s at Harry’s New York Bar in Paris . However it wasn’t until the 1960’s that celery was associated with the drink, when a guest at a Chicago hotel was given a Bloody Mary but nothing to stir it with. He improvised with a stick of celery from the buffet!
